Therapeutic ultrasound
What is therapeutic ultrasound?
Therapeutic ultrasound therapy has been commonly used in human physiotherapy since the 1940s, and is now very common in canine rehabilitation programs since the 1970s. It is non invasive and painless on application. It uses an ultrasound probe to send high-energy sound waves into desired tissues over specific regions when we worked on them. As the tissues absorb the waves, they are converted to heat and thus able to conduct deeper heating element into deep tissues to enhance and facilitate healing. It is best effective when used in conjunction with manual therapy. The ultrasound probe is applied directly against the pet’s skin using water-soluble ultrasound gel. It is able to greatly benefit joints, so they can work more effectively promoting improved range of motion. It also improves circulation, thereby increasing the pliability of muscles, ligaments and tendons.
